Best Foot Forward is at the forefront of standards development and application for both carbon and ecological footprinting.
In developing footprinter, Best Foot Forward has
drawn on ten years of experience in measuring ecological and carbon
footprints and on our extensive relationships with organizations who drive and
set policy. Best Foot Forward continues to work with all those involved in
facilitating standards including DEFRA, the Carbon Trust and the Global
Footprint Network, to ensure that footprinter
remains compliant with existing and emerging standards.
Standards for methodologies and applications are crucial for the credibility of efforts to measure and monitor footprints.
Footprinter is designed to be fully compliant with
ISO 14064-1,
which sets
out how organizations should monitor and quantify their emissions. This in
turn is compliant with the WRI
(World Resources Institute)
and WBCSD
(World Business Council for Sustainable Development)
Green House Gas Protocol.
ISO 14064-1
Best Foot Forward has developed footprint analyses for over 300 client
organizations to meet the requirements of
ISO 14064-1 .
- Published in 2006, ISO 14064-1 details principles and requirements for designing, developing, managing and reporting organization or company-level greenhouse gas inventories.
- ISO 14064-1 covers boundary-setting, quantification methods and management issues. It also includes guidance on quality control, reporting, auditing and verification.
Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol
Best Foot Forward is an invited consultant on planned extensions to the GHG
Protocol to cover products and supply chains.
- The Greenhouse Gas Protocol is the most widely used international accounting standard for businesses and other organizations.
- Developed by the World Resources Institute (WRI) and World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) in collaboration with more than 350 leading businesses, it is the basis for nearly every GHG standard and programme in the world.
- The protocol takes the approach of identifying emissions by 'scope'. Scope 1 is direct usage on site, Scope 2 is emissions caused by power or energy consumption but emitted off site (e.g. electricity and steam) and Scope 3 is a much wider category of indirect emissions such as transport or emissions from the supply chain.
PAS 2050
Best Foot Forward is an expert adviser to the
Carbon Trust
on the development of PAS 2050, and an approved supplier for
The Carbon Reduction Label
scheme.
- This ‘publicly available specification’ (known as PAS2050) has been developed in the UK by the British Standards Institute, DEFRA and the Carbon Trust.
- The goal of PAS 2050 is to provide a consistent framework for assessing the full life cycle greenhouse gas emissions of goods and services. PAS2050 was published in late 2008 and we are steadily increasing the application of the standard for our product footprinting projects.
